Coach Pernell Mason brings decades of experience and a proven track record in player development and team success. As one of the founders of :Kaizen Athletics Tour, Pernell combines his deep understanding of the game with a passion for nurturing talent at every level of play.
Playing Career
Pernell’s soccer journey began as a player with notable teams, including:
•First Portuguese (1988-1990): Semi-professional team in Canada.
•Trained with Toronto Blizzard (Half a Season): One of Canada’s premier soccer clubs.
•Newtown Football Club (1985): A highly respected travel team in his native Trinidad.
This foundation allowed Pernell to develop a unique perspective on the game, focusing on speed, fitness, and agility training to help players reach peak performance.
Coaching Career
With over 25 years as a head coach, Pernell has led teams to extraordinary success:
•Ontario Cup Championships: Coached U15 and U16 boys from Brampton and Dixie Soccer Clubs to provincial glory.
•International Tournaments: Guided teams through prestigious competitions in the U.S. and Europe, gaining invaluable exposure for his players.
•Brampton Hitmen (2003): Led the team to a CPSL championship in the Canadian Professional Soccer League.
As the Director of Recruitment for Brampton United Soccer Academy (2011-2015), Pernell helped identify and cultivate top-tier talent. He later joined Mississauga Falcons and Rise Academy, coaching alongside renowned former Toronto FC player and coach Rick Titus.
Player Development
Pernell’s ability to identify and develop elite talent has resulted in numerous players advancing to professional careers and earning full scholarships. A few standout players he’s worked with include:
•Levonte Johnson
•Trained at Rise Academy.
•Earned full scholarships to Seattle University and Syracuse University.
•Currently plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps after being selected 29th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft.
•Tajon Buchanan
•Trained with Mississauga Falcons under Pernell’s guidance.
•Secured a full scholarship to Syracuse University.
•Now represents Inter Milan and Team Canada.
•Andre Joshua Ali Gayapersad
•Trained from a young age at Brampton United.
•Currently plays for CF Damm in Spain, competing in the same league as FC Barcelona’s youth academy.
•Represents Canada’s U16 National Team.
